|Terence Newman Helps Dallas Students Read.Play.Win!
Rising Stars Foundation
DALLAS, TX - In November, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman partnered with the University of Phoenix to introduce the Read. Play. Win! literacy program to the Dallas area, with the goal of increasing literacy rates of children.
As the 157,000 youth from the Dallas Independent School District began to read books and log their reading time, in hopes of winning some great Dallas Cowboys prizes, the Dallas University of Phoenix campuses urged the Dallas/Ft.Worth area to join in the challenge and help fight low literacy rates. With the help of the Dallas Cowboys, the Terence Newman Rising Stars Foundation and community volunteers -- a tremendous impact on literacy was made. The results for the five-week community promotion are as follows:
1) Read to a child - Over 4,930 minutes logged by volunteers
2) Donate a book - 537 books donated at six Dallas Univeristy of Phoenix campuses -- Amazing effort, fantastic job Dallas!!
3) Donate cash - $20,000 cas donated at local Albertsons stores for the Everybody Wins! USA literacy organization!
Congratulations on these fantastic results and a big THANK YOU! to Dallas residents for efforts to improve literacy and give children in the Dallas area the tools they need to prepare for the game of life. The children of Dallas ISD will continue reading their books and logging their hours until January 14, when a "Blue Star Reader" will be announced and featured on a billboard in Dallas.
Many other children, classes, teachers and schools will also win great prizes, such as autographed helmets, stadium tours and player/mascot appearances. Additionally, area teachers will soon be able to take advantage of Phase II of Read.Play.Win! by participating in special workshops which will provide tools for increasing reading engagement. Workshops for parents will also soon be available.
