DALLAS -- Terence Newman's Rising Stars Foundation, the official charity of Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman, awarded 11 recently graduated Dallas ISD students with $5,000 college scholarships. These students were all members of the foundation's mentoring program.
Newman launched his foundation in 2007 to benefit and support some of the most promising young student-athletes in the Dallas Independent School District during their high school years. Each year since, the foundation has selected 10 freshmen from a pool of students nominated by teachers, administrators and coaches, to become members of Newman's program. In addition to providing tutoring assistance through Sylvan Learning Center, Newman has also taken the students on regular outings which include community service projects, movies, bowling, and even to the Dallas Mavericks' practice facility to play basketball.
Ten of the 11 program participants who recently received their scholarships were members of the foundation's first class. One (Galen Durden) was a member of the program's second class and graduated a year early.
"I wanted to give the kids that have potential to become leaders and positive examples for this community an opportunity to reach that potential," Newman said. "I am excited to provide these scholarships to these 11 great young men. I have gotten to know them very well over the last four years, and they are all good students and very good people. They all have a very promising future, and I am happy that those scholarships will help them achieve their goals."
The students in the program are now attending the following schools: Sam Houston University, Henderson State University, University of Texas - Arlington, Wiley College, University of Memphis, University of Texas - Austin, Mountain View College, University of North Texas, Texas A&M Commerce.
